Team Associated RC10B2 #9000
The Team Associated RC10B2 was released in 1995. The RC10B2 was the first major evolution from the original design. The biggest change was the chassis. Gone was the aluminum tub design for a fiber composite 3 piece chassis. The composite chassis was lighter and just as rigid as the aluminum design. I felt the aluminum design flexed a lot and was not very rigid. The composite chassis was a major improvement in my opinion. The RC10B2 featured aluminum front & rear sections that bolted to the composite chassis. Having these aluminum sections allowed the suspension to dampen on aluminum parts vs composite. Using aluminum here allowed the parts to be very rigid while being extremely thin. I also thought this made maintenance very easy as you could unbolt the front or rear from the main chassis very fast.
The stealth transmission was also improved with a larger differential to handle more powerful motors and extend the time between rebuilds. The featured RC10B2 was built from an original #9000 kit. Once built this transmission spun so freely it was incredible. This design is still impressive 30 years later.
Rough track handling was improved by increasing front and rear suspension travel. Front shock length was also increased to aid in handling. The suspension geometry was also changed to improve on power steering. The rear shock tower is now made out of fiber composite for more rigidity and lower weight. Smaller axles ( 3/16” ) were used to reduce rotating mass. This change also allowed for larger ball bearings to be used in the rear hubs. Larger bearings had a longer service life and could take more abuse. The rear hubs now allowed for the wheelbase to be changed by positioning the hub spacer either in front of the hub ( longer wheelbase ) or behind the hub ( shorter wheelbase ). Previously you had to remove four screws and move the pivot blocks forward or back to adjust wheelbase.
The kit came in two options, #9000 Team Kit, & #9011 Sport Kit. The Team Kit included full ball bearings, PTFE coated shocks, & universal drive shafts. The Sport Kit substituted bearings for bushings, PTFE coated shocks for non coated gold shocks, & universal drive shafts for dogbone style axles.
The RC10B2 would go on to win the 1995 2wd IFMAR Worlds in Japan. Team Associated really nailed it with the B2. So much so that finding an original B2 is very difficult not to mention finding one new in the box like I did. When the RC10B3 was released in 1997 it wasn’t a major change from the B2, more of a refinement. Team Associated released conversion kits ( #9022 - #9023 ), so a lot of RC10B2’s became RC10B3’s over time. B2’s are tough to find due to conversions and simply a short production run before the B3 was released.
